King County Flood Control District preparing hazard mitigation plan to ensure public safety

February 10, 2010 -

Plan identifies risk from multiple hazards, creates mitigation plan

To help ensure the safety of those who live in or near floodplains, the King County Flood Control District is developing a comprehensive hazard mitigation plan that identifies potential risks from multiple hazards and offers solutions for reducing those risks.

Citizens have the opportunity to learn more about the plan's development at a public meeting set for Thursday, March 4 from 6-8 p.m., in the Eagle Room of the Issaquah Police Department, 130 E. Sunset Way, Issaquah.

The meeting will include a presentation of data and maps on flood, dam failure, earthquake, liquefaction, landslide, lahar and wildfire hazards that could impact flood facilities that are managed by the Flood Control District.

The public will have an opportunity to review the data and speak with Flood Control District representatives about the risk associated with these hazard areas.

The Flood Control District, a special purpose government that was created to provide funding and policy oversight for flood risk reduction projects and programs in King County, is scheduled to release a draft hazard mitigation plan for public comment on March 15.

The plan, and other information, will be available online at www.kingcounty.gov/environment/wlr.

The Flood Control District's public involvement component of the plan development includes a comment period that ends March 31. All comments received during this time will be considered when preparing the draft hazard mitigation plan, which is expected to be adopted by the Flood Control District in June. Send written comments via e-mail to priscilla.kaufmann@kingcounty.gov, or:

Priscilla Kaufmann; King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks; 201 S. Jackson St., Ste. 600; Seattle, WA 98104.

The hazard mitigation plan is being developed to assure the Flood Control District is consistent with the federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000, and would allow the district to take full advantage of federal disaster assistance opportunities.
